To show up in Google AI Mode and Gemini you need two things the AI Overviews snippet does not fully reward: a clear, corroborated entity that Google's Knowledge Graph can resolve, and content that answers the many sub-questions a single conversation spins off. These are conversational surfaces — they decompose a question, pull from Google's live index and Knowledge Graph, and synthesize an answer you can keep interrogating. How these surfaces work, and why they are not the Overviews snippet
An AI Overview is a summary that sits on top of an otherwise normal results page: roughly one query in, one synthesized block out, tightly tied to what already ranks. AI Mode and Gemini behave differently, and the difference changes your tactics.
AI Mode is a dedicated conversational tab. Google has described it as using a "query fan-out" technique: it breaks your question into several related sub-queries, runs them in parallel across the index, and stitches the results into one answer, then lets you ask follow-ups in the same thread (reported by Google; observed in the product). Make your entity legible (Knowledge Graph and schema)
Gemini grounds answers in entities, so your first job is to be an entity it can resolve without ambiguity. That entity clarity is, in our read, the single biggest lever for the Gemini surface (hypothesis) — because grounding starts by identifying the "thing" before it picks sources.
- Ship Organization schema with your legal name, logo, founding details, and `sameAs` links to verified profiles (LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata). This gives Google explicit signals to connect your site to a Knowledge Graph node.
- Describe yourself the same way everywhere. Pick one canonical one-line description of what you are and who you serve, and repeat it across your site, profiles, and directory listings. Contradictory descriptions make you harder to resolve.
- Earn corroboration you do not control. Answer the whole fan-out, not one keyword
Because AI Mode explodes a question into sub-queries, the winning play is topical coverage, not a single optimized page.
- Map the sub-questions. For a priority topic, list the adjacent questions a buyer asks next — definitions, comparisons, pricing logic, use cases, objections — and make sure each has a clear, self-contained answer somewhere on your site.
